UK Routes

#1 Beitrag von Vern »

I've been taking a further look at the route editor in conjunction with Roland's worthy looking Transdem. I'm definitely keen to take a crack at doing a UK route, just a couple of issues to clarify...

Someone (I think it was Oli) kindly sent myself and Jason Morgan a brief summary of creating terrain then pegging out the course of the line in Transdem. The example given was a short section of Fort William to Mallaig which would be an ideal section of route to model (the alternative would be Dingwall to Kyle of Lochalsh). However I wouldn't want to step on any toes so need to know if anyone is already working on either of these routes before making a serious start.

After that, all we need is some Class 27 & Class 37 locos and a Class 156 (or Class 158) DMU!

Update to the above, I'm going to take a crack at Fort William to Mallaig. Got the DEM data and maps scanned so just a question of following the necessary processes.

Good news, Vern. I like this line. But you will expect a steam propulsion model, do you? I'm afraid this will take some time.

BTW, could you have a look at my translation request in the dictionary thread and possibly provide some assistance, please?

Great :wow !

I don't think so - the class 27 and 37 are diesels!

But of course he will need AWS and RETB .....

Regards,
Christian

There used to be steam hauled tourist trains on that line as well, apart from Diesel locos and DMUs.

I know; and probably these trains are still running nowadays. But Vern didn't mention them .....

The train is called "The Jacobite" and runs during the summer. It looks like Rene and I will have a go at the end of July ...

Well let's get the route built first!

Good news is I have matched the maps with the DEM and have traced the basic line of the railway. Currently made a start on smoothing the curves with "Abstectrechner". Results look impressive though it is tricky knowing which sections of the old track to delete without messing up the new. I will continue to profile the basic course of the line, with opposite vectors and parallel etc. tracks and platforms later on.

At some point Oli and/or Roland will need to give me a walkthrough getting the terrain data in the route.

I'm hoping that a British route will kindle interest in Zusi in the UK. Though I frequently try and promote the title on UK Trainsim it is very hard to wean people away from the death throes of MSTS - to a proper train sim!

I am looking forward to that route Vern, as you say a 37 would go down well :]

The route I am doing is not as exciting as yours, it is on the Southern Region running between Brighton and Eastbourne including the Newhaven and Seaford branch. It is electrified with the 3rd rail system and has a mixture of colour light and upper quadrent semaphore signals.

The trains that mainly run on it are the class 377 4 car electric multiple unit- http://www.therailwaycentre.com/Pages%2 ... U_377.html

And still to be found only just are the slam door 4 car class 421/423 electric multiple units- http://www.therailwaycentre.com/Pages%2 ... U_421.html

This is a great site for technical information about UK trains.

Glad you liked that DVD oli, I try and visit the higlands of Scotland at least once a year, if I could live there I would.

I thought about starting with something simpler, but you know me - in at the deep end and West Highland Mallaig extension has a certain bit of class about it that's not going to come from doing Reading to Swindon!

tricky knowing which sections of the old track to delete without messing up the new
just delete the last element of the old trace and then select the first element and "delete -> all".

Are these lower-quadrant signals still in use in the UK?

Oli's S&T department is producing some fine stuff for us UK route builders at the moment, and he is doing an excellent job. How many of you thought you would of seen UK signals in Zusi?

These signals are great. I have tried creating somersault signals myself, but have given up on them again ... I'd love to see them in action one day.
